How it all began...
Like most people Chris Danielsen felt sick every time she heard of a child's abduction or murder. On October 1st, 2000, a 10 year old little girl named Heather Thomas was abducted and one month later her little body was found floating in a park lake. This time it happened in Chris' neighborhood.
"Something touched my heart," she said. "I don't know what it was, but when this happened I just knew we had to get up and do something."
15 year old Justin lives in the same complex where Heather's father lives and from where she was abducted from the parking lot while riding her bicycle. He was greatly affected by the abduction and has since turned activist in his own right for his peers.
The Fence of Hope was a daily reminder to Chris, Justin and the hundreds of passersby that change is needed.
Chris and Justin organized the first, "Show-You-Care-Day" and some 200 concerned citizens of all ages showed up at the Surrey Provincial Court House in support. Follow-ups to "Show-You-Care-Day" were scheduled and supporters continued to follow...
Since that time Put Kids First has decided that this issue and many of the issues around our children's safety are so important they've made it a full-time mission. Many, many PKF volunteers (PKFers) are out in the communities spreading the word, helping out at events, showing up for offender court dates, making calls and writing letters. You can be one of them.
Put Kids First plans to do whatever it takes to keep the issues affecting our children's safety alive until changes are made and our children live in safer communities. (Of course there are never enough volunteers so if you're feeling motivated PKF would love to have you on board.) |
