Spandex-clad menace at large
Christina Montgomery, The Province
Published: Friday, December 22, 2006

The spandex suspect has struck again, and police are worried his assaults on teenage girls could escalate.

A man with a taste for outlandish clothing -- and the ability to move around the Lower Mainland with ease -- has assaulted at least five teenage girls in a month.

Just after noon on Tuesday, he jogged toward two teenage girls walking near the corner of 29th Avenue and 268A Street in Aldergrove. As he passed them, he struck one girl on her buttocks and fled.

The assault came just 45 minutes after a man fitting the same description -- middle-aged, balding and sporting bright-red spandex shorts -- jogged across the corner of 208 Street and 37A Avenue in Langley and struck one of two 13-year-old girls on her buttocks.

This week's assaults follow three on Nov. 22 in which teenage girls were assaulted in a similar fashion in Burnaby and Richmond.

In one assault, a teen walking alone was grabbed from behind by a person who shoved his hands down her pants so hard her underwear tore in two.

In the November attacks, the man wore a shiny blue, short-sleeved, one-piece spandex outfit resembling a wrestling uniform.

Because police fear an escalation in the severity of the assaults is possible, they are asking that anyone who sees suspicious behaviour report it, said Langley RCMP Const. Amanda Dodd.

The suspect is 30 to 40 years old and between five foot seven and six feet, with a slim face and build. He has brown hair, wears glasses and is clean-shaven. Anyone with information can call police at 604-532-3200 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
