A Surrey student who intervened in a degrading assault
on a young woman was later swarmed and pummeled by at
least seven men.
Twenty-year-old Adam Smith was outside the Citrus Nightclub
in Langley when he saw a disgusting sight.
A friend's girlfriend had too much to drink and had passed
out in the parking lot.
One drunk decided it would be funny to urinate on the
intoxicated young woman, while the man's friend looked
on laughing.
"I think it's bloody ridiculous that somebody would
do that," said Smith, a B.C. Institute of Technology
student. "I think it was pretty bloody disgusting."
So Smith re-entered the nightclub, got the girl's boyfriend
and confronted the culprits.
"They called me a snitch, and we had a fight,"
said Smith.
"A scrap's a scrap."
What happened next, after he had squared off in a fair
two-on-two battle, is what has Smith furious.
Later that night, after his friends had left the club,
Smith was jumped by a group of men -- how many he doesn't
even know since he was trying to defend himself.
"There were somewhere between seven and 12 of them,"
said Smith. "I couldn't tell -- I was too busy trying
to fight them off."
For his trouble trying to intervene on behalf of the
young woman, Smith was left with a broken nose and cuts
to his head, nose, face and jaw.
Langley RCMP Cpl. Diane Blain is shocked at the thought
of the assault on the young woman.
"I think it's appalling," said Blain.
The investigation continues, and RCMP hope witnesses
will come forward to identify those involved in both the
original assault and the subsequent swarming of Smith.
Blain said the two main culprits in the 2 a.m. assault
Sept. 30 had diamond studs in both ears and were wearing
thick gold chains.
